Maiden Assembly Session Begins: TVK Government Inaugurates New Legislative Term Under CM Vijay

Introduction

The first session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly commenced on a historic note as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) coalition government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, assembled for the first time since assuming office.

The inaugural session began with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delivering the traditional Governor's Address, outlining the government's policy priorities, development agenda, and welfare initiatives for the coming years.

As the first sitting of the newly constituted Assembly, the session marked the official beginning of the TVK government's legislative journey.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's Historic Address

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar described the smooth conduct of his address as the beginning of a "new era" in Tamil Nadu politics.

He expressed satisfaction that the Governor's Address was completed without any major disruption, something that had not happened in nearly three years.

Another historic moment was the playing of the National Anthem at both the beginning and the conclusion of the Governor's speech, a first in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The development was widely viewed as a symbol of improved coordination between the Raj Bhavan and the newly elected TVK government.

A Sharp Contrast With the Previous DMK Government

The peaceful Assembly proceedings stood in stark contrast to the frequent confrontations witnessed during the tenure of the previous DMK government.

During the administration of former Governor R. N. Ravi, the Assembly experienced repeated constitutional and political disagreements. On several occasions, the Governor declined to read portions of the official address, walked out of the Assembly, and disputes between the State Government and the Governor's Office became regular headlines.

In contrast, Governor Arlekar delivered the complete speech prepared by the government and also acknowledged several historic personalities, including Rani Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal, reflecting the government's emphasis on Tamil history and social reformers.

TVK Government's Policy Direction and Development Agenda

In his inaugural address, Governor Arlekar announced that the TVK government would continue its efforts to secure a fair financial deal for Tamil Nadu by pursuing legal remedies before the Supreme Court of India whenever necessary.

The Governor also emphasized the state's demand for:

  • Greater financial devolution from the Central Government

  • Protection of State rights

  • Continuation of the Two-Language Policy

  • Commitment to social justice

  • Conducting a comprehensive Social Justice Survey

The speech suggested that while the government has changed politically, several long-standing policy positions on federalism, language rights, and social justice will continue.

Significance of the TVK Coalition Government

Governor Arlekar highlighted the uniqueness of the TVK coalition government, describing it as a model based on "shared governance and shared power."

According to the Governor, this is the first time in 74 years that Tamil Nadu has witnessed such a broad coalition participating directly in governance.

Quoting former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai, the Governor remarked that:

"The people alone are the legitimate masters of the nation."

He further stated that the people of Tamil Nadu had chosen a new government by rejecting the influence of money power, muscle power, and political intimidation.

Major Demands Placed Before the Central Government

The Governor also referred to the Chief Minister's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which several important demands concerning Tamil Nadu's development were submitted.

Among the key requests were:

  • Establishment of a Centre for Airborne Systems near Hosur for defence research and development.

  • Immediate intervention to halt the proposed Mekedatu Dam Project by Karnataka on the Cauvery River.

  • Permanent measures to prevent the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka.

  • Early administrative approval for new Metro Rail projects in Hosur, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

These demands underline the TVK government's focus on infrastructure development, water security, national defence investments, and the protection of Tamil fishermen's rights.

Conclusion

The first Assembly session under the leadership of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay marked a significant political milestone for Tamil Nadu. From the smooth conduct of the Governor's Address to the announcement of the government's policy priorities, the inaugural session reflected a new administrative beginning.

The emphasis on cooperative governance, State rights, social justice, financial autonomy, and major infrastructure projects indicates the direction the TVK-led coalition government intends to take in the coming years. At the same time, the peaceful proceedings highlighted a noticeable departure from the confrontational atmosphere that characterized previous Assembly sessions.
